Istanbul Pipe Organ Team had a regular maintenance visit to beautiful Christ Church (Crimean Memorial Church) in Istanbul. During our visit, we checked the condition of several action parts, manuals, etc. and most importantly the condition of pipes and tuning. This humble 1911-built W. Hill and Son organ has very sweet and charming flue stops and well-known composer Guilmant's F Major Elevation from the book "The Practical Organist" was a very elegant match. We hope you will enjoy. A dream came true. Thanks to intensive works and effords of Artisan Organisation, Opus Amadeus 2nd International Istanbul Pipe Organ Festival 2019 was the top musical event of the country. First festival was organized by them as well. Before...? Silent instruments... Meanwhile we are keeping restoring historical instruments, this festival is providing us the opportunity to present our instruments to well-known artists and to have lovely feedbacks for our event, culture and our care for our pipe organs. In this humble video, you will see briefly backstage of our preparation before the festival in one month . Our to-do list contained the operations such as examining the organ pipe by pipe, making a list of pipes those need a warm touch, keeping them sounding finer (voicing), cleaning, tuning etc... were performed very carefully and patiently. For this year's festival, two very well-known artists played this magnificent instrument with great repertoires. Jonas Hellesoe and Emanuele Cardi. Result was wonderful to hear and both artists' performances were beyond the words. They did show us the power and elegancy of this instrument in such way that we have not experienced before. Here are some notes about the festival and the video: 1) In organ terminology, coupling is used to borrow sounds from different manuals. If you need a register from Swell, in Great, then you simply couple Swell to Great and enjoy it! Our chief technician is coupling Great manual to Pedal to examine the match of tuning. Excitement may twist the mind sometimes 🙂 2) The application he is using for tuning is Peterson's strobe tuner. It allows you to see the harmonics as well and you have the options such as choosing different temperaments and setting the frequency desired. This time, our team is in beautiful St. Mary Church which located in one of the best area of Istanbul. This church was built out of wood only in 1815 and it was a humble small church. Due to increasing Christian community in the area, the need of a bigger church was inevitable. Finally on 8th September 1866 Bishop Brunoni blessed the new concrete church and it began to Glory the God with the large community. The drawings inside was made by famous artists of the time such as Giuseppe Carta of Palermo. Especially between 1880-1910 the Church had golden age. Beside the church there were boys school and girls school under the control of priests and nuns. By time, the community gradually got smaller and one priest was enough to keep the services, in urgencies they could call priests from other churches. At the present time, Church is standing in the same place with the full glory and servicing as the house of God. The organ located in, Gebrüder-Rieger Op.518 built in 1896 which was for French High School's first chapel in Istanbul. So it is modest enough to accompany the hymns and help students in their music classes. Since young pupils were going to sing with it, Rieger built it with transposing manual sliding upon a frame so that the teacher could adjust keyboard to match the key of the music with students' vocal range. On one of the top boards of its bellows, we found a date of disassembly in 1914 and assembly in 1919, also a disassembly-assembly in 1921. Within those years, we know the chapel was closed and the school were building their second and larger chapel which was going to have a A. Cavaille-Coll organ. We only assume that after the year 1914, the organ was relocated in St. Mary Church. However, we unfortunately do not have enough documents to tell exactly which year it was relocated and when it was the last time it had a proper maintenance. In the video, you will see almost the full process of our work for the organ including its bellows, parts' cleaning, pipes, chest, keys and action regulation. Since we were going to have our 3rd Organ Concert in this place also you will see a short scene from our rehearsels. Soon we will be uploading our concert's video as well. We specially thank to the authority of the church, Fr. Martin Kmetec Fr. Lucian Abalintoaiei Fr. Mihaita Herziu for letting us to complete this project. Thanks to their supports and our patient work, now we have one more organ in Istanbul that can speak for the Glory of the God. By completing this project, Istanbul Pipe Organ Team left its first year behind with 3 restorations and 3 organ concerts. This particular music, by Tarkan Sendal, was composed for the first organ concert following the restoration of 1911 Hill and Son pipe organ in Christ Church (Crimean Memorial Church) in Istanbul. The music presents the beautiful sound of the organ, blended with the profound spiritually of the ney, which is the most important instrument in Islamic culture. He has composed two chorales for organ and ney, and the second piece will be featured in our documentary video which is in process of preparation, and which will be out, soon. Special thanks to our chaplain Fr. Ian Sherwood for giving us this opportunity, and also to our team members whose contribution to the work of the Istanbul Pipe Organ Team has been, and continues to be, so important. In beautiful, cute and modest St. Helena Chapel, old but yet strongly looking Hill and Son organ needed help. This organ was built in 1888 and from the documents we see it was built originally for British Embassy Chapel which is St. Helena Chapel. One of the organs which was not relocated. During 2000s, after an unfortunate incident, the ceiling fell upon the organ case and damaged her badly. There were problems with air system, chests, pipes, pedals, so on. It took slightly longer than 2 months, disassembly of pipes and chests, minor and major fixings, cleaning and very though tuning... But the victory was on our side. We made it speak elegantly again. We finished our overall job with our 2nd concert. Thanks to our lovely soprano and passionate violinist, this concert proved that "the king of the instruments" is immortal and will speak eternally to glory the God as long as we are there. Our aim is to save as much as we can. In this video you will also see our working conditions. Although we did not have a workshop or very profesional equipments with us, we did our best with minor sources. This is why we are trying to raise fund for our team. We know that people care music are with us and almighty God is with us on this path. Last but certainly not the least, Istanbul Pipe Organ team presents special thanks to the Anglican Churchs' Chaplain Ian Sherwood for he letting us to save the organs and supporting us during our whole work. Our work took place in beautiful Christ Church in Istanbul. The team has worked on one Hill and Son organ dating back to 1911. Here you see the beautiful details of the St. Esprite Cathedral in Istanbul and the Gebrüder-Rieger Organ Op.596 built in 1897. Istanbul Pipe Organ Team has worked hard for this organ to clean it, to repair problems and to make it look handsome. It was prepared for a festival performed couple of months ago and since then as the team deals with other organs, we could not tune properly at the moment video was being recorded. You may hear few sounds slightly out of tune. The main purpose of this video is to show our beautiful cathedral and pipe organ, and to give an idea to the audience that there are people caring the instrument that glorifies the God and we perform the holy music on it.
